The Art of The Romance Novel Series
A romance novel series is a good way for romance readers to engage and to become interested in your books. As an indie author who just started another series and who has a couple of other romance novel series in
the pipeline, I have been thinking about the art of the romance novel series.
Here is what I think.
This is nothing new, but a good idea will get romance
readers interested in reading your romance book(s). Whether that be a pair of billionaire
brothers, nannies falling in love with single Dads, or a bunch of FBI agents
who find love while tracking down criminals, having a good idea is where to start. But how
do you know if your idea is good?
Do research and see what is popular and ranks well on
Amazon. Whatever you choose, a good idea is the key. What if you don’t see a book
that closely relates to your idea? You have to decide if you want to go further
with the probability of no readers interested in reading it.
The First Story Should Draw the Readers In
You want to make sure that your first book draws readers
in and makes them want to read subsequent books. This is easier said than done,
but a good plot, dialogue, and three-dimensional characters are a good place to
start. With the Virtue series, my first book is the one where I had a clear
idea about the plot, and that is why I started my series with" Patience, My Billionaire."
Writers must have a good idea about
what the series will be about. I, for one, do not do outlines. I have tried to
write them, but it is just not in my brain to start a story with one. Instead,
I have an idea about what the book will generally be about. I like coming up
with a plot as I go along, but for some writers an outline helps.
I don’t think it matters how many books there are in a
series. I have seen 3 to 100 books in one.
My Virtue series has about seven or eight, but it really does not matter.
What does matter is to make sure you have the stamina to write them. I started a
series a long time ago, and the last books were not that good because I just
lost interest, which brings me to my next point in writing a book series.
Choose The Theme Carefully in Your Series
You are going to be with your series for a while, so
choose your series theme carefully. There is nothing more annoying than having
to write something you have lost interest in. Although there is nothing that says,
you must write your series back-to-back. Writers can release one book in their series
once a year.
A romance novel series can be profitable and get
readers interested in your past catalogue but make sure that you are prepared
to work hard to make sure that all the books in your series are good.
