How I Price My E-books On Amazon

Tricky is the word I use when pricing my romance
e-books on Amazon. If you want to get 70% percent of royalties, then price your
e-books at $2.99 or higher. The problem
with that, if you are a new writer, it might be hard to get people to pay that
price if they have never read your books.
Romance Short Stories
If you choose 35% percent of royalties on Amazon, then
you price your e-book below $2.99 which I do. I am reluctant to price my romance e-books at
70% percent royalties because my e-books are short. The ones I wrote in the past were between 10,000 to 25,000 words. Now I write short romance stories between 5,000
to 7,000 words. Although I am trying to write longer works. Read my post titled “Writing Confessions” on
why I now stick with short stories.
Readership
Another thing about my e-books is that I haven’t built
up a big readership yet. I have priced my longer e-books at $1.99, which means
I get 0.70 cents for every book sold, and for shorter works, I price my e-books
at $1.49, which I get 0.52 cent in royalties per book. I do this because I feel
that I get enough in royalties, that I feel compensated enough for the work I
put into my books.
Pricing At 0.99 cents
I am not an expert when it comes to pricing-e books. I simply am telling you what I have done and why. I have priced my e-books at 0.99 cents, which I hated to do because that seems too cheap to me. I put too much work in my books, and I feel cheated at pricing it that low, but I have done it when my romance story has not sold well.
One thing I have noticed is that it does not make much
difference in terms of sales meaning, in my opinion, it does not increase sales.
I have read articles where the person has felt that new readers are more willing
to take a chance on you if you price your e-book at 0.99 cents but in my
experience that is not the case.
A lot of romance indie authors have a limited run on prices. They will have their e-book for 0.99 cents for a few weeks to get sales and some reviews before raising their price. I haven’t done it, so I don’t know if it works.
When I buy books, I choose to purchase ones based on whether the cover looks good and the blurb seems interesting. I am willing to give new authors a try. I don’t mind paying $2.99 for an e- book. The only thing that might stop me is bad reviews, but if the e-book has good reviews, that cements my decision. If the e-book is like 2 pages, I probably won’t spend $2.99 on it.
For books priced at 0.99 cents you get 0.35 cent
royalties on Amazon. Even though my e-books are short stories and novellas, I
put a lot of work in them, and I want to be compensated so, as I said, 0.99
cents is too low for me. As my word
count rises and I build up a readership, I will go up to $2.99.
